Appearance
Atsuko is a very small individual, with no clear muscle to be found. She is easy to miss, her small stature oftentimes causing her to be overlooked- and underestimated. She radiates a childlike innocence, her round face and large green eyes making her look far younger than she is.Her hair is a chestnut brown, hanging in natural ringlet curls down to her waist. She usually has it wrapped up in a low braided bun at the base ofher skull to avoid issues while she's working, tucked safely under her habit. A spattering of freckles stretches across the pale skin of her cheeks and partially up the bridge of her slightly upturned, button nose.Atsuko never wears makeup, nor jewlery, and is most often seen in her nun's habit. She wears flats while on duty- as well a pair of comfortable purple kneepads beneath her skirts, a gift from a good friend of hers. Atsuko has scars littering her knees, and the palms of her hands are far moe calloused than one might expect- she is very clumsy. When not on duty, Atsuko's attire is still very modest, skirts and dresses never reaching above her knee. She doesn't have much in the way of 'fancy' clothing, only having one or two outfits she would wear for special occasions. Her personal clothing tends to have a bit of a country aesthetic, and her nicest shoes are a pair of cowboy boots that she takes extremely good care of.
Personality
Atsuko is quiet. She tends to keep to herself, not speaking unless spoken too. She is a very submissive person, oftentimes afraid to speak her mind on even important issues fir fear of punishment for being 'disrespectful'. It is a rare occasion that she will trust someone enough to tell them her thoughts- but she's slowly getting better as she forms relationships with her colleagues at Company 1.She is a very sweet and innocent soul, but she's not stupid. Having worked in a hospital, she has seen her fair share of human bodies, and she knows how they work. Being constantly teased for her innocence, among other things, she learned. She's not naiive, but that doesn't keep her from being embarrassed about it all.Atsuko is extremely caring, and an empath. She feels things very deeply, and is one to always give someone the benefit of the doubt. She gives second chances a little too easily, to the point that she might be considered a pushover, and rarely stands up for herself. The exception to all of this is when she is in an emergency medical situation. When it comes to her work, Atsuko becomes an entirely different person. She is stern, exerting the authority she has in the medical field without hesitation. She takes charge easily, showing incredible decision making and leadership skills that would not be expected from her. She will, and has, told her superiors to 'shut up and let her do her job'- this is a particular trend with Lieutenant Rekka Hoshimiya and Plateau Chief Koto Akahoshi, both whom often try to insist that they're 'fine' and refuse medical attention.Of course, when all is said and done, she can't help but feel incredibly guilty for 'being disrespectful', and can be found in the confessional as soon as she can get there- after she profusely apologizes, of course.
Background
Atsuko was only an infant when her parents both infernalized, leavng her an orphan. Her only next of kin incapable- or unwilling- to care for her, Atsuko was tossed into a small convent out in the country, an orphanage full of young girls and run by traditionalist nuns. She was raised following the strict standards of how 'young ladies' should conduct themselves- quiet, submissive, and weak. Punishment for breaking rules was harsh, even minor ones. Physical abuse was used regularly, hard taps with rulers on the backs of hands or legs, kneeling on sharp stones while praying as 'atonement', bare-bottomed spanking-all in front of the other girls to 'set an example.'While some of the girls grew rebellious due to this treatment, Atsuko grew timid and submissive. It was all she had ever known. That didn't stop the quiet resentment from building inside of her- her rebellion was the quiet, subtle sort, and she took pleasure in doing small, insignificant things to feel a sense of freedom. At the age of 18, Atsuko managed to crack the chains that held her, working at a hospital for nearly three years before being transferred to The Grand Cathedral at the age of 21 to take the place of one of the lead nurses there, who had grown too weak in her old age to get around well enough anymore and had settled into a peaceful retirement. Her time in the hospital had helped to begin breaking her out of her shell, many of her coworkers encouraging her to have fun and join them in their many adventures- parties, drinking, the things that folks just discovering adulthood lvove to do. While she often declined, just spending time around them at work slowly eased her into being more comfortable around people and discovering who she was outside of her sheltered childhood.Upon arriving at Company 1, however, it seemed her progress had reset. This was a church, a very impportant church- surely the rules of conduct were far stricter than they had been in the hospital? The stress of a new home didn't help matters much. But she soon found that she had nothing to fear, Captain Leonard Burns and the Lieutenants Karim Flam, Rekka Hoshimiya, and Foien Li quickly making her feel welcome- as well as her 'big sister', then First Class Fire Soldier Koto Akahoshi, who she hadn't seen since the older woman had left the convent nearly 8 years prior. While still struggling with her childhood trauma and the fears and hesitations that come with it, Atsuko is slowly learning to open up and be herself again, discovering who she is as an individual, and striving to do the best she can to help those in need.
Skills and Abilities
Atsuko does not have an ignition ability. Her skills lie in healing, being adept in the art of medicine. She is shown to have extremely good judgement skills and composure under pressure, as well as extensive knowledge of the human body and it's functionality. She is capable of preforming sutures even minor surgeries, given that she has access to the correct equipment. She also is known to have deadly accuracy and a strong arm, able to hit targets from quite a decent distance. Her weapon of choice seems to be her shoes.
